The true cure of cancer is prevention. There is strong evidence to show that screening has saved lives resulting in reduced deaths rates and falling incidence of invasive cervical cancer in the UK and other countries with effective screening programmes. The test involves taking a sample of cells from the neck of the womb (cervix) with a special swab (cervical smear). The sample is processed in the laboratory to identify presence of any pre-cancer cells. The same sample is used to check for the presence of Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), which is the cause of the cancer in virtually all cases. Depending on the results, you may need to undergo examination of the neck of the womb (cervix) with the microscope (colposcopy). This painless procedure enables the gynaecologist (colposcopist) to assess the presence and extent of the pre-cancer lesion. When a lesion is found, a biopsy may be taken under local anaesthesia. Again this is sent to the laboratory for further investigations which confirm the extent of pre-cancer change. Following this biopsy treatment, you will be given advice on what to expect and the "DOs and DON'Ts".

Vaginal Bleeding After the Menopause (post-menopausal bleeding).
A woman bleeding unexpectedly, following the menopause, at whatever age, should seek medical help immediately. This is because most cancers of the womb (uterus, endometrial cancer) present this way.
The overwhelming women who have bleeding after the menopause do not have cancer.
The investigation of the woman with abnormal bleeding after the menopause involves taking a thorough history, a pelvic ultrasound scan and taking a sample from inside the womb. Frequently this sampling or biopsy of the lining of the womb follows examination with a fine (2mm) camera, in a procedure known as hysteroscopy.
